Washington Ramps Up Pressure for Kurdish Oil Restart – What It Means for DNO
A BasNews interview today with energy analyst Dr. Govand Sherwani confirms that the U.S. is intensifying diplomatic efforts to restart Kurdish oil exports through the Iraq–Türkiye Pipeline (ITP) – a move that could unlock significant upside for DNO.
“The U.S. position is clear,” Sherwani said. “Oil exports from the Kurdistan Region should resume immediately. It's not just about local revenue – it’s about regional stability and strategic energy supply.”
Sherwani highlighted that multi-million-dollar contracts with U.S. energy firms are at risk if exports remain blocked, and estimated the economic toll of the halt (since March 2023) at a staggering $20 billion. For Iraq, already operating under a tight 49 trillion dinar budget, the urgency is escalating.
“If the Region resumes oil exports and hands over crude to Iraq’s SOMO company, Baghdad will have no excuse to continue withholding the full budget share,” he added.
